Altered Playing Cards

I had fun yesterday playing with a deck of cards. I am a member of the "Junk Journal Junkies" Facebook group and the challenge of the month is to alter 5 Playing Cards.  I grabbed a deck and started working to change them.

 

First I sanded the backs just in case the slick finish resisted the Modge Podge I decided to use as glue. 

Next you can glue them to any paper you choose. I decided to make these journaling cards so coffee stained card stock was added.

You can decoupage plain card stock if you like.

When the glue is dry add old sewing patterns, book text and art work of any kind to the front. I chose to color copy some of my sketches on card stock and cut them down to fit.

 The above card is made with the new Jane Davenport face stamp that appeared at Michaels craft stores this week. I used watercolors to paint her hair. If you don't draw you can go to a site "The Graphic's Fairy" . com and use her free images. If you would like to learn to draw I recommend watching Dina Wakely You Tube channel on how to draw a face. It takes a bit of practice but if I can learn-so can you!

This is a doodle of a beach scene I drew years ago. You can see how I cut and blended the two on the final card. Yes I know it is sideways, but I haven't learned how to turn photos yet.....

This was a fun craft and easy to do. I would advise you to print your photos or artwork on card stock rather than printer paper to avoid bleed through.

Bee Pot

Summer has arrived! There are many chores to do in the garden....one is a pot redo!
This is the before:

1. Wash and dry the terracotta pot.

2. Paint two coats of white paint. I used what I had...Anne Sloan Old White

3. Use double stick tape to tape a piece of white tissue paper to a piece of cardstock measuring

 8 1/2 X 11 to fit your printer.

4. Decoupage with OUTDOOR glue and let dry and cure two days before potting. (The pot was sticky at first.)

Plant your favorite pink blossom and watch it grow!

The hard part is deciding where to put it....on the porch?

On my desk in the kitchen? I do love my new kitchen.....we have been working since last November.... but that's another post (when we get the flooring done).

Here in the kitchen Mona can let me know when it needs watering...

A Haven of Books Canvas:READ

Happy New Year Peeps!

     After our family "company" left it was time to get out the supplies and make something.
I opted for another canvas decorated with books.

The idea came from a YOU  TUBE video....the artist is Vicky Papaioannou entitled Art Journal Page:Reading. I watched it several times, made a canvas and sold it at a craft fair in November.


This is the one I completed today.......READ.....

This is the first one that I did. The canvas is much smaller. It was a good start for my first one. There is a learning curve if you haven't been to art school and learned how to work with some of the mediums.

The above canvas had a grey cardstock base and books that were hand made as shown in the youtube video. Images from the internet.

This canvas I used paper from Cratepaper.com, Emma's Shoppe Collection}Books #E5855

Glue using medium to a cut up empty roll from paper towels. Distress edges with Tim Holtz Walnut stain.

Below: Cover the canvas with tissue paper. I used Tim Holtz music and dictionary words. Stain with distress ink, faded jeans on bottom, tumbled glass on top and walnut around all the edges. Mix modeling paste with black acrylic paint and stencil on eye chart(or whatever you want)

Build books one at a time allowing to dry in between....patience is a virtue....I am still working on that part...sometimes I can't wait so I rush things a bit.....having to weigh down the books so they will stick...

I printed off Alice from the Graphic's Fairy and placed her on the right side of the canvas after coloring with Tim Holtz distress ink markers.

Stamp a library card with "Books" and add any other stamps. These were from Tweety Jill's Book Artist and Vintage School Days.

Then I decided to add several clocks and Ex Libris card plate from Pottery Barn. It was lacking something at the top....a vintage alphabet printed off, colored, distressed and backed with blue cardstock added to distressed tag punched from Creative Memories....add jute string and I thought it was done.....

Then I decided to add a frame of the small books not used....so around the canvas I went taking several hours to finish....Now a 4 day project is finally done.

You really should watch the video. It is 20 min. long but very detailed. Vicky is a great teacher! My books are a little more wavy than hers.....but this is crafting.....not an exact science I am sure!

ASCP Three Drawer Dresser

The back wall of our family room needed some "sprucing up". I had painted an old dresser purchased at an estate sale. The dresser was brown and I did not take before pics....at the time I had 3 days to paint 10 pieces of furniture for the Fancy Flea. I was in panic mode, not blog mode....it was as brown as the school desk chair on the marble top....just use your imagination.

The suitcase is another project completed in March. I used a bag of cancelled postage stamps purchased along the Seine River in Paris, France. The tag says "luggage, $30, stamps $35, 8 hrs. of Modge Podge $10, trip to Paris=PRICELESS! Yes, I am selling it for $75. It will be available at the Fancy Flea, Plant City, Florida-the first Sat. in Nov. 2013. ($5 admission fee to craft fair)

Rag Ann has the perfect happy face. I had a collection in my daughter's room when she was small. She is a red-head also.

The old school chair and painted oil can came from a craft fair in Gatlinburg, TN years ago.

I threw in the mailbox to see if you are paying attention....Mrs. Johnson's mailbox was painted years ago......she is returning the box for recycle....I will need to remove her name unless another Mrs. Johnson wants to claim it......

I perfected the apple years ago when I painted so many teacher gifts....now back to the dresser.....

Two coats of ASCP in Paris grey followed by clear wax. I wanted the dark wax, but my daughter talked me into leaving it alone, and frankly I was too tired to do otherwise. I have grown to like it. Love the oak/acorn drawer pulls....the marble top is stained in a few places.....it has true grit and real character!

I think it needs a plant, but there is no light in this back corner.....not sure anything would survive.

Fancy Flea 2013

Has anyone in Lakeland been to the Fancy Flea? I am not sure what possessed me to sign up to do this craft show but I needed my head examined.....about 3 weeks before the craft show...

Pure Panic set in! I have to get these projects done!

Well, if you read the last post hubs and I were busy carting a chicken coup to Mississippi....I did have 3 days of spring break to paint...but a good many of the projects were completed by my daughter...

I had requested help from my niece who also paints furniture....she helped too and had some lovely furniture. The trunk she painted....we could have sold 4-5 of them...they were such a big hit. In the pic below the child's desk in the bottom left corner was my fav. It had a scripture written on the pull out drawer...so cute with the blackboard paint on top! Katie sold cute lamps, pillows and even a file cabinet!

After 3 days of rain.....the LORD blessed us with a day of sunshine! It was a gorgeous spring day! Thanks Kristy for the loan of the blue tent....just in case....

My other niece, Olivia makes the cutest tutus and baby pacifier clips.. they are hanging from the top of the tent...and on the right side.......they were a big hit too!

I was afraid we would not have enough....but between the 4 of us we were full!

We caused a traffic jam early in the day...so many folks trying to get into the booth!

I slipped out of the booth to take a photo of the insanity.....

This was a wooden box from Hob Lob I had taken many hours to decoupage....It was splendid...and the one thing I would have kept...but it sold....sometime you mark things you want to keep up....and they sell anyway....ha.

The canvas decoupaged with toile tissue paper, dotted with green crocheted doilies and buttons turned out great.

My friend Kristy was next door ....white tent ...we are the navy tent...so we took over the outside of her booth with the furniture...

She and her mom had cute jewelry, fabric and handmade purses and back packs....

The mirror surrounded by 100+paper roses was one of the first things to sell. (left side reflecting a tree ) Congrats Lindsay on a job well done....

Coffee table below is up on it's side to save room. Our space was 10 X 10 but we were way over the line...

The coffee table  took hours....and I gave it away, practically. I was very tired and did not want to lug it home.

Painted wooden coffee table...Annie Sloan paint, wax black and white with Music from Paris decoupaged on the center....

In this photo we repurposed a trunk into a toy box for a boy...red with chalkboard paint on the top and 3 rulers on the front... yellow tag with the price.....very fun.

This was a small canvas I painted pink and added a few things from my Paris box...stamps, a photo of the outside of the Louvre with a young couple wearing Burberry shades~ a glittery Eiffel Tower...

Lindsay made several book wreaths....she did a fabulous job....and has turned into being quite the crafter!

This pic is her recycled pepper glass jar that turned our so cute....

So thanks to all the niece's and my daughter for helping me accomplish this crazy notion....It was fun to do but I think I would rather walk around and enjoy everyone else's hard work than to repeat the process. The next one is the first weekend in November so mark your calendars. If you happen to be near Lakeland, Florida considered yourself invited. The fair is 9 A.M.- 4 P.M. downtown near and around Munn Park.
